DETAIL CROSS SECTION VIEW OF THE TREE AND ITS COMPONENTS

The following elements are visible to the naked eye:

PITH
It is the innermost tree, so when the plant is old, the oldest part of the outer tree, the cavity dies and becomes dark and dark. It varies in size and shape.

HEARTWOOD
This is the area around the pit. It will be darker and stronger. This area is useful for various engineering purposes. This is the dead part of the tree. It has several annual rings.

SAP WOOD
This is the next layer of hardwood. It signifies the latest development and contains the sap. It plays an active role in tree growth by allowing the trees to move upwards. The sapwood annual rings are less sharply divided and light coloured. Also known as  Alburnum.

CAMBIUM LAYER
It is a thin layer of fresh sap lying between the sapwood and the inner bar. It still has sap that has not been converted to sapwood. When the bark is removed and the cambium layer is exposed to the atmosphere, the cells cease to function and the tree dies.

INNER BARK
It is the inner skin of the tree that protects the cambium layer. It provides protection to the cambium layer.

OUTER BARK
It is the outer skin of the tree and consists of wood fibres. Sometimes it contains fissures and cracks.

MEDULLARY ROCKS
These are thin radial fibres that extend from the pith to the cambium layer. They hold annual rings together. They are broken in some trees, and still, others are not important.
